The Do’s and Don’ts of Halloween in College

Halloween is right around the corner, and at College Unfiltered we’re all excited to celebrate! Since all of us are seniors in college, we’ve had a few years to figure out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to celebrating this spooky holiday. So save yourself from experiencing a nightmare Halloween party, and follow our list of do’s and don’ts!

DO plan ahead

No one wants to be stressed out the day before Halloween trying to decide their costume and plans last minute, so do yourself a favor and start planning your Halloween festivities at least a week or two in advance. This means you need to decide on what you want to dress up as (and actually buy it!) before it’s too late—trust us, nothing’s more frustrating than having a Halloween costume delivered on November 1st. Planning ahead also means figuring out who you’ll be hanging out with on Halloween; are you going to make plans with your roommates? Friends from class? Deciding on who you’re spending the holiday with will make the what part of your plans a lot easier.

DON’T pull harmful pranks

This shouldn’t even have to be said, but anything that actually harms another person is not a prank! Please remember that Halloween doesn’t give you an excuse to behave in a way that you normally wouldn’t (other than wearing a crazy costume, of course), so keep yourself and those around you safe by staying away from any unsafe behavior. Not only could dangerous pranks cause harm to yourself and others, but you also run the risk of being expelled from your university.

DO explore off campus events

There’s a whole world outside of college parties and events, so don’t be afraid to venture off campus this Halloween. Some of our favorite Halloween activities include corn mazes, haunted houses, and pumpkin patches, among others. Most downtown areas also host some sort of fall festival, so check out your city’s social media pages to find information about it. Who knows, you might even find that you prefer some of these events more than partying!

DON’T drink and drive

Every major holiday sees spikes in drunk driving related deaths, but Halloween is one of the top killers. These drunk driving incidents are even more prominent among younger generations, which is why it’s so important to look after yourself and others this Halloween. If you know that you are going to be drinking, make sure that you arrange ride plans beforehand, whether that involves a designated driver or an Uber ride. Check in on your friends this Halloween too, and make sure not to let anyone who has been drinking get behind the wheel.

DO stick with a group

If you’re going to party this Halloween, make sure you do it with a group. College parties are often a free-for-all in terms of who is invited, so you’re probably not going to know most of the people you’re partying with. Going out with a group and sticking with them the whole night will give you a solid support system in case anything goes wrong. Staying with a group is especially important if you’re planning to go out on the town, so make sure you’ve picked out some trusted friends to party with!
